Excerpt, from Five Good Minutes at Work
“Effective self-care arises from self-awareness joined with kindness and compassion.
A good time to practice self-care is anytime you are feeling tired, and especially if you are feeling exhausted.
Instead of feeding anger, negative self-talk, or feelings of despair over being tired, try the following practice.
- Breathe or listen mindfully for about a minute.
- Set your intention. For example, “May this practice bring me ease.”
- Focus mindful attention on. your “inner body”—sensations, energy level, degree of alertness.
- Compassionately acknowledge any feelings of fatigue or dullness. There’s no need to fight, avoid, or defend them. Simply breathe mindfully, allowing and including the feelings in your awareness in this moment.
- Gently ask, “How can I best care for myself at this time?” Listen for all the answers.
- With kindness and compassion, choose your wisest response.”
